TSSS, CLSS cop Schools Netball titles

The Thomas Saunders Secondary School (TSSS), and the Central Leeward Secondary School (CLSS), were crowned Junior and Senior Division champions respectively, when the Vita Malt Schools Netball Competition concluded{{more}} last Friday afternoon, at the Kingstown Netball Centre.

Contesting its first final, the TSSS made sure it was one to remember, as they left the St. Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua, in the runner-up position.

The TSSS led all the way, winning the first quarter 12- 4; the second quarter finished 20 -10 in their favour and they extended their lead in the third quarter 31-16.

The lasses from the TSSS, which is in its seventh year of operation, finally triumphed 39-24.

For TSSS, Nefatari Billingy scored 21 of her 23 attempts and Deneisha Gurley scored 18 of her 29.

For the losing finalist, Kadijah Williams poured in 22 of her 29 attempts and Shada Isaacs scored her two attempts.

Before the Junior Division finals, the Bishop’s College Kingstown defeated the Emmanuel High School Mespo 23-17, to take the third place.

It was also a comfortable win for the Central Leeward Secondary (CLSS) over the North Union Secondary (NUSS), as the two battled in the finals of the Senior Division.

Charles Douglas deposited 26 of her 33 attempts and Kaywana Charles 24 of her 32, as the CLSS ran away with a 50-28 victory.

For NUSS, La Toya Baptiste netted 16 from 23 and Sierra Baptiste 12 from 21.

After a competitive first quarter, in which CLSS narrowly led 8-7, the rest was mere formality, as the more experienced CLSS showed their supremacy.

With a backing band and vocal support in the stand, CLSS controlled the second quarter, wining it 23-15, and maintained the momentum into the third, taking it 34-24.

But it was in the final quarter that the CLSS was rampant, as they scored a bounty of 16 goals to the NUSS’ 4.

Triumphant Coach of the CLSS Moeth Gaymes summed up his team’s success to 3, as “success achieved”.

Gaymes explained that it was a completion of a job which started last year.

“We played unbeaten last year and had it all made and gave it up in the finals, as the girls underestimated the Emmanuel High Mespo; this time we went unbeaten all the way,” Gaymes said.

Gaymes who also coached the national Under-16 team in 2010, thought his charges were the more experienced, since some of them have represented St. Vincent and the Grenadines at both the Under-16 and Under-23 levels.

Docking in third in the Senior Division was the 2009 and 2010 winner, the Emmanuel High Mespo, who narrowly beat the Petit Bordel Secondary 19-18.

The 2011 competition saw participation from twenty-one educational institutions across St. Vincent and the Grenadines. (RT)
