Combined Stars upset Aussies in Bequia T/20

The youthful Courts More Faith Combined Stars created a major upset when they defeated defending champions Knights Trading Aussies Hairoun Beer T/20 Cricket Competition on the weekend at the Clive Tannis Playing Field in Bequia.{{more}}

Aussies posted 116. Dean Browne struck 38 and Verden Baptiste hit 38 not out. Bowling for Combined Stars, Adinal Richards and Roneil Jeffrey both took 2 for 30.

In reply, Combined Youths made 117 for 5, with Roneil Jeffrey leading the way with 56 and Alrick Pompey, 25. Verden Baptiste grabbed 2 for 16, and Braxie Browne, 2 for 20. It was a proud moment for the Combined Youths outfit, and Captain Garfield Sargeant did not hide his feelings when he spoke to SEARCHLIGHT last Monday evening.

“It is a great feeling to beat the defending champion, and it comes at the right time,” an elated Sargeant said.

“We played well all round and we went out there to beat them,” Sargeant added.

The win pushed Combined Stars up the standings, as they are enjoying their best run in this the team’s fourth year of existence.

Combined Stars have another opportunity to dispose of another former champion when they meet Admirality Transport Youth Combine on Saturday from 2pm.

Also recording a win last weekend was D’ Graduates over Manicou.

Allan Foyle scored 53 not out, Olanzo Billingy, 37, and Mc Leon Boucher, 35, as D’Graduates compiled 234 for 7 from their 20 overs. Brian Henry took 2 for 43, and Cleon Cato, 2 for 48, bowling for Manicou.

Brian Cozier, with 3 for 14, was the lead bowler for D’ Graduates, as Manicou was dismissed for 96, losing by 138 runs. And, Bequia Express West Side Knockers earned a seven wicket win at the expense Carib Stars.

Batting first, Carib Stars made 189 for 6 from their allotted 20 overs.. Cameron Lavia scored 33 not out, Alroy Hoyte, 26, and Veron Williams, 23. Desbert Yorke picked up 2 for 16, and Neil Baptiste, 2 for 34, bowling for West Side Knockers, In response, Neil Baptiste led the charge with 80, Marcus Hackshaw, 40 not out, and Matthew Patterson ,25 not out, as Wrest Side Knockers reached 193 for 3.

Other matches slated for this weekend pit Village Apartments Port Elizabeth against Knights Trading Aussies from 10am on Sunday, and from 2 pm that same day, South Side United faces Manicou.
