Shallow breaks national Shot Putt record again
Vincentian field athlete Adonson Shallow, on Saturday, March 12, not only earned an All-America honours with a third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the Texas A&M Campus, but set a new St. Vincent and the Grenadines Shot Putt record.{{more}}
The 24-year-old Shallow, who weighs 293 lbs, posted a throw of 21.19 meters or 69 feet, 6.25 inches, to break the previous mark of 20.07 meters, set in January last year.
Shallow, who missed last yearâs Commonwealth Games in India, has now qualified for the Pan American Games and the World Championships.
Shallow first established the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Shot Putt record at the 2004 Central American and Caribbean Junior Games, when he threw 16.55 Meters.
He subsequently broke it with throws of 17.43 and 18.97 meters at meets in the USA.
It was a fitting end to Shallowâs Collegiate career, as he is now a Senior at the Southeastern Louisiana University, and was south region field Athlete of the Year.
His third-place finish was the best for an individual Southeastern male student-athlete at the national meet since the Lions made the transition to Division One
Shallow, a former student of the then Emmanuel High School Kingstown, now the Dr. JP Eustace Memorial, is a five-time Southland Conference champion, four-time Southland Conference Outstanding Field Performer, the 2010 Southland Outdoor Athlete of the Year and the 2009 Southland Indoor Newcomer of the Year.
In 2010, Shallow was named the South Central Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association after earning All-America honors with a fourth place finish in the Discus at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He is also the league record holder in the weight throw.
At present, Shallow holds the best throws among OECS athletes in the Shot Putt, Discus and Hammer. (RT)
