Athletics takes lion’s share of National Sports Awards

Team Athletics SVG ran away with most of the awards when the National Sports Council staged the 2010 National Sports Awards last Saturday evening at the Media Centre of the Arnos Vale Sports Complex.{{more}}

Going Team Athletics SVG’s way were the Coach of the Year, Junior Sportswoman of the Year, the Senior Sportswoman of the Year, the International Sports Personality of the Year, and the overall Sports Personality of the Year.

Godfrey Harry warded off six other nominees to be named Coach of the Year. Nadia Delpesche copped the Junior Sportswoman title, ahead of four others.

Natasha Mayers, who won the gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the 100 m Female event, copped the Senior Sportswoman of the Year, the International Sports Personality of the Year and the Sports Personality of the Year.

The Junior Sportsman of the Year award went to footballer Myron Samuel, and cricketer Dellorn Johnson, the Senior Sportsman of the Year.

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Squash Association retained the Association of the Year award.

Other awards on the night of recognition saw the National Sports Council acknowledging two individuals and two firms for their contribution to sports in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The individuals recognised were Sabrina Mitchell and Trevor Huggins. Mitchell has been the fulcrum of the Bequia Basketball Association for over a decade, while Huggins has served on the Executive of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation and is the Chairman of the North East Football League.

Corporate entities the National Broadcasting Corporation and telecommunications firm Digicel were rewarded with plaques for their input.

The NSC Chairman’s award went to journalist with Searchlight Rohan Thomas, with the Groundsman of the Year going to Branford Medford. Thomas also retained the Sports Journalist of the Year title.

Also at last Saturday’s ceremony, Michael Findlay gave a detailed replay of the life and times of Frank Thomas, a former cricketer and Cricket administrator who died last year.

In addition, the Minister of National Mobilisation, Social Development, Family, Persons with Disabilities, Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Frederick Stephenson, Chairman of the NSC, Carlton James, and Chairman of the National Lotteries Authority, Murray Bullock gave the addresses.
