SVG retains senior Windwards Cricket crown

St. Vincent and the Grenadines has retained the Senior Windward Islands three-day cricket competition which ended in Grenada last Monday.{{more}}

The defending champions finished with 28 points, having completed outright wins over St. Lucia and Dominica and had a no decision against the host.

Their last match was a virtual final against Dominica, as both teams entered the match locked on 16 points each. St. Vincent and the Grenadines scored a six-wicket win to confirm themselves as champions.

Asked to make 100 for the maximum points, SVG reached 102 for 4. Hyron Shallow led the run chase with 44 not out, Sunil Ambris made 43, as Vincent Lewis took 2 for 9.

Dominica had batted first and scored 192. Kirsten Casimir, 54, and Mervyn Matthew, 34. Dellorn Johnson bagged 7 for 50.

SVG replied with 255. Shallow scored 57, Salvan Browne hit 53, Ambris, 42, and Donwell Hector, 36, were the main contributors for the Vincentians. Ray Casimir took 4 for 65 and Vivian Titre 3 for 68, bowling for Dominica.

In Dominica’s second innings of 162 all out, Tyrone Theophile struck 94. Kieron Cottoy had figures of 3 for 52, Johnson, 2 for 28, and Alston Bobb, 2 for 50.

The win followed a 91-run win over St. Lucia. SVG posted 336. Donwell Hector scored 150 and Linden James, 79. Johnathan Joseph took 6 for 52, Dalton Polius, 2 for 94, Alex Antoine, 2 for 96.

In reply, St. Lucia made 193. Denis Louis hit 55, Johnson Charles, 51, Gaspard Prosper, 32, and Keddy Lesporis, 30. Kenroy Peters bagged 5 for 27, and Alston Bobb, 2 for 33.

Batting a second time, St. Vincent and the Grenadines declared at 145 for 5. Hector, 53, Atticus Browne, 39. Jonathan Charles had 2 for 25 and Alex Antoine, 2 for 36.

Requiring 289 for a come from behind triumph, St. Lucia’s chase stopped at 197. Lesporis struck 65, Johnson Charles, 55, as Cottoy snared 4 for 72, Kenroy Peters, 3 for 24, and Bobb, 2 for 23.

St. Lucia finished second with 18 points. The St. Lucians finished off host Grenada in the final round, defeating them by four wickets.

Grenada made 235 in their first innings. Nellon Pascal, 54. Larry Edwards took 5 for 68, and Dalton Polius, 4 for 61.

St. Lucia responded with 190.Denis Louis, 53, Polius, 52, Sergio Fedee, 43. Denis George had 4 for 53, and Pascal, 3 for 44.

But Grenada crumbled for 54, batting a second time, as Johnathan Joseph, 4 for 21, and Bronte Bess, 3 for 12, wrecked their innings.

St. Lucia hit the required 100 runs for the loss of six wickets. Johnathan Charles made 35. George took 3 for 31, and Pascal, 2 for 35.

Dominica docked in third with 16 points.

In their match versus Grenada, Dominica made 198. Kevin James, 40, Mervin Matthew, 36, Samuel Mitchell, 30, Oscar George, 30 not out, Tyrone Theophile, 26. Denis George, 6 for 75.

Grenada replied with 94. Andre Fletcher made 65. Vivian Titre, 5 for 28, Ray Casimir, 3 for 28, and Vincent Lewis, 2 for 14.

Dominica reached 199, batting a second time. Kevin James, 98 not out.

Troy George, 3 for 43, Ronald Etienne, 2 for 36, Emmanuel Alexander, 2 for 39, and Denis George, 2 for 65.

Grenada chasing 304 made 159 to lose by 144 runs. Heron Campbell made 92.Ray Casimir grabbed 4 for 43, Vincent Lewis, 2 for 19, Mervyn Matthew, 2 for 22, and Vivian Titre, 2 for 42.

Grenada finished last with 8 points. (RT)
