Catch the fever! Vincy Heat ready to radiate

St. Vincent and the Grenadines will host Group B of the Digicel Caribbean Cup from tomorrow at the Victoria Park.{{more}}

The host faces Montserrat in the second of the evening’s double header.

Kicking off the group will be St. Kitts and Nevis and Barbados.

On Friday, Montserrat takes on St. Kitts and Nevis. This is to be followed by a match between St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados.

The last night of competition on Sunday, sees Barbados facing Montserrat in the first match, with St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Kitts and Nevis crowning it off.

Matches begin at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. each day.

Technical Director and Head Coach of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines team, Sammy Carrington, is confident of his young charges doing well, but insists that they must put away their chances.

“We are a very offensive team, and we are disciplined enough at the back, and I see no reason why we cannot win the group,” Carrington told SEARCHLIGHT last Saturday.

Carrington said he was focussed on what his team is capable of executing on the field.

He thought it was imperative for the Vincentians to advance. He described the current crop of players, as a good group, who has the ability to extend their chances of victory.

The local team was last week joined by four overseas players, three are playing in neighbouring territories. In are Trinidad and Tobago based Shandell Samuel and Durwin Ross, and Oscar Nero, who is based in Barbados.

Also joining the squad is US based, Seinard Bowens. Canada based Cornelius Stewart has been with the team since the middle of last month.

The Vincentians were expected to be in camp from yesterday.

In the Vincentians last outing in 2008 in the biennial competition, they failed to get past the preliminary round, which was held in Martinique.

Then, the Vincentians were beaten by the host 1-3, but turned around to inflict the same score line over Anguilla.

In this year’s format, the winners of each of the four groups in the preliminary round and the two best second places, join the six seeded teams: Cuba, Haiti, Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and Antigua and Barbuda, in the second stage.

The top two teams from each of the groups in stage two will join the holders, Jamaica, and the hosts, Martinique, to make up eight finalists from November 26 and culminates on Sunday, December 5.

The champions walk away with US$120,000. The losing finalist will take home US$70,000 and third and fourth place winners will win US$50,000 and US$30,000, respectively.

Meanwhile, the top four countries will also advance to the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States. (RT)
