SVG is set to hold grand road race

Team Athletics SVG will be staging a grand race to end its road racing season.{{more}}

It is clear that the local athletics body is following through on the advice of Jamaican, Neville “Teddy” Mc Cook, President of the North America Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC), who encouraged them to stage such an event.

When Team Athletics SVG unveiled its 2010 itinerary last week, it announced that a Road Race Grand Prix will be staged in Georgetown on Sunday, November 28.

At last year’s Team Athletics SVG’s Awards Ceremony held on Saturday, December 12, at the Rush Bar in Kingstown, Mc Cook advised TASVG to culminate its road racing season with an overall championship race.

He further promised that NACAC will match the local funds garnered from corporate sponsorship for this major event.

Preceding the grand finale, there will be seven other races starting this Sunday with the Round D Town four legged Road Relay.

Opened to both males and females, categories in the race include the Open segment as well as the Secondary and that of Primary Schools.

Next on the calendar will be the National Properties Cross Country run at Diamond, with the usual age groupings.

On Sunday, October 17, the runners will head to the north of the island to be a part of the Sandy Bay race.

Once the hub of road racing in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Sion Hill will see the Sion Hill Sprint coming its way on Sunday, October 24.

Now an integral part of road races here, Log Enterprises will be the title sponsor of the next three races on October 31, November 14 and 21.

First comes the Rabacca Dry River to Byrea Hill race, to be followed by the Rillan Hill to Layou race and the North Leeward race, which will be ran from Troumaca Bottom to the Beach Front Restaurant in Fitz Hughes.

Absent from this year’s calendar are the Canouan and Union Island 5 km races.

The Road Racing Committee of Team Athletics SVG would be hoping for renewed energies in this aspect of its annual events starting with Sunday’s race.

The Road Relay was expected to begin at 3p.m., from the juncture at South River Road and Halifax Street and was expected to end at the same area.

For the past two years, there has been significant participation in the Round D Town Road Relay.

2007 was a successful year when 46 teams entered. In 2008 that number dwindled to 20, and last year, went further to a mere 13 entrants.

Of significance last year was the non-participation of the primary schools. (RT)
