Dorsetshire Hill Softball Cricket competition off with a bang

Excitement returned to the Dorsetshire Hill Playing Field last weekend with the re- introduction of Softball cricket at that venue.{{more}} After an absence of over a year and with growing demands by players and spectators, a new organising body was put in place and the game of glorious uncertainties and slighting fortunes returned to the community.

The opening programme included remarks from Chairman of the organising Committee -Michael Duncan, Chairman of the National Sports Council – Carlton “Teddy”James, Endorsement by the Sponsors SVGTV and Log Enterprises and Junior Minister of Sports Cecil “Ces” Mc Kie.

In the first of two exhibition games that followed, the Dorsetshire Hill and Gomea/ Belair U-15 teams played to an exciting tie. Both teams made 62 after the allotment of their ten overs.

Batting first, Dorsetshire Hill’s 62 was compiled by Justin Braket, 25, and Matthew Gibson, Adonish Nanton took 2 for 3 from 2 overs. In reply, Adonish Nanton also led with the bat scoring 17. Jondale Greaves took 2 for 11 from his 2 overs. A fitting start indeed to the competition by the youth.

In the second game, the Dorsetshire HIll mature team triumphed over their Arnos Vale counterparts by 34 runs. Batting first, the guys from the Hill amassed 108 for 8 off 15 overs; Felix Greaves, 22, Michael Duncan, 19, and Rupert Bascombe, 18, were the principal scorers. Ces McKie returned best figures for the Vale guys, taking 2 for 12 off his 3 overs.

Arnos Vale in return could only reach 74 for 6 when their overs ran out. Ken Hull, the only batsman of merit, hit an aggressive 41. Six bowlers took our wickets each for Dorsetshire Hill.

The competition will bowl off in earnest on the weekend after Carnival, when the eighteen participating teams begin facing each other across the pitch competitively.
