Digicel sponsors Rotary South Firms Softball Cricket

Digicel’s participation and sponsorship of the 11th annual Rotary South Firms Independence Soft Ball Cricket Festival helped make the family-oriented competition a success.{{more}}

So says one of the organizers of the event Ces McKie. Speaking on Tuesday, McKie praised Digicel for assisting the Rotary Club South with the competition that this year saw the participation of some 20 firms. The competition began on Friday, September 25, and ended last Saturday, October 10. It was held at the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex.

“Digicel’s sponsorship added to the flavour of the competition because Digicel not only was reflected in their sponsorship but they had a physical presence in that they came on spot on two weekends and afforded the patrons and players the opportunity to purchase credit and get it in the form of a double bubble”, said McKie.

During the finals held last Saturday night, a softball cricket team made up of Digicel staff members played a friendly game against members of the Rotary Club South. Digicel won by one wicket after the Rotary Club only managed to make 42 runs in four overs.

“The innovation of the organizers versus the sponsors was a major hit for the spectators. They were able to get a little laugh and a loud applause in some cases, and I think this is something that we must continue once we have the partnership in place”, smiled McKie who added gleefully, “We saw the players on both teams, some doing well and some not so well, and I think that added to the atmosphere of the finals”.

Describing Digicel’s sponsorship as a “major partnership”, McKie commented, “they allowed us to offer greater incentives to the teams.”

But while Mckie added that the competition has grown and has become a household name around Independence time, he observes, “this year we have seen an increase in the competitiveness of the teams; everybody seems to want to win and that is one aspect that we have to look at that we not losing the fun aspect which is the most important aspect; we have to reign back in the teams and tell them this is fun, so don’t play the game so seriously”.

Meanwhile, Marketing Executive at Digicel Edmund Joachim said that Digicel is hoping to continue with their contribution next year. He described the Competition as “a great family event that incorporates both fun and competition for persons to take part in”.
