Edwards wins Mr. Novice Bodybuilding Contest
Billed as a full fledged bodybuilding show, the activity last Saturday night at the Peace Memorial Hall in Kingstown turned out to be a competition among three novices.{{more}}
The event was put on by the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Amateur Body Building Power lifting and Fitness Federation (SVGABBFF) Yes, the SVGABBFF, as one of the organisers John Mc Lean adamantly said to SEARCHLIGHT.
Leading up to Saturdayâs show, the pre-event was saturated with controversy as to the legality of the body hosting the body-building contest.
A notice published in last weekâs edition of Searchlight under the letterhead of the SVGABBFF stated that the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Amateur Bodybuilding Power Lifting and Fitness Federation will not be holding a championship on Saturday, 29th August, 2009.
The notice further advised the public that Steve Victory and John Mc Lean are not Members of the Executive of the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Amateur Bodybuilding Power lifting and Fitness Federation Executive and warned âany representation made by them in this regard is fraudulent.â
In the end, the contest did come off, but with reduced participation, and notably a spattering of support from the general public.
The Novice category lived up through to form and had participation from Richard Morris of the Spa Vale Fitness Gym and Dane King from the Kingâs Gym, and Quincy Edwards of Good Samaritan of Georgetown.
Edwards, looking the better cut and defined bodybuilder, was declared the winner, with Morris second and King third. The trio left the venue with trophies, as well as tokens of health foods.
The advertised Mr. East/West St George Contest, which was open to bodybuilders who live or train in gyms in those areas never came off.
Also, the four seasoned body builders named to compete for the Mr. SVG title, in Desmond Shallow, Kenrick Title of Silverâs Gym, Dimitri Williams and Kenville Spring of Good Samaritan Gym never showed up.
Following the show, Mc Lean, who contends that he is the bona fide Treasurer of the SVGABBFF, told SEARCHLIGHT: âBetter days are coming for bodybuildingâ.
Victory, who according to documents produced by Mc Lean, heads the Executive of the SVGBBFF, lamented to those present at the venue of forces working against the good of the sport.
He said that come October, a major body building event will take place here, involving overseas based Vincentian competitors and some from neighbouring territories.
The Avenue Dancers and a special appearance by songster Shernelle âSkarpyonâ Williams wooed the gathering with their performances at last Saturdayâs show. (RT)
