Mustique holds successful inaugural TT championships

Mustique Company One defeated James Archibald’s Construction three games to one last weekend to take the team title in the inaugural Mustique Firms and Construction Companies Table Tennis competition.{{more}}

Glenroy Robertson and Peter Simon were the victors over Chadwick Carrington in both singles and doubles play, as they strode to a comfortable win.

En route to the Finals, Archibald’s Construction saw off Reynold Gibson Construction three games to one, while Mustique Company One had a similar score line over Mustique Company Two.

In the open singles, Glenroy Robertson whipped Alwyn James in straight sets 11-2, 11-4, 11-7, to take the title.

Robertson had previously taken out Carrington, with James getting the better of Lenford Hooper.

In the doubles, Peter Simon and Glenroy Robertson got the better of Carrington and Hooper 14-12, 14-12.

Carrington and Hooper had earlier whipped the pair of Charles Lewis and Elvin Hannaway.

Simon and Robertson stopped the duo of James and Elucid Sargeant in semi final play.

Sargeant, though, went on to beat Nile Jackson 11-6, 11-6, to win the 45 to 60 age group.

Buoyed by the successes of the championships, organizers are hoping that the event will become an annual exercise. It is also hoped that emerging from the championships, a representative Mustique team will be selected to participate in national competitions.

Sean Stanley, who lent his expertise to the championships, said that he was happy to see the spread of the sport to the island.

Stanley, a former President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association, said he was pleased with the level of competence of the players, especially since they do not play regularly. He said their performance augurs well for the sport.
