SVGCU hosts its annual Keep Fit Training Camp

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cycling Union held its annual Keep Fit Training Camp at the Bay Hill Apartments, Sion Hill Bay, from Friday, January 23 to Sunday, January 25, 2009. The event was sponsored by the National Olympic Committee of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and was orgainsed and executed by the SVG Cycling Union, led by its president Trevor ‘Sailor’ Bailey.{{more}}

During the three-day exercise the following topics were covered:

  •  The Mechanics of cycling, structure of the UCI (International Cycling Body)
  • Maintaining good health, Olympism
  • How to take good care of a bicycle and others.

A practical training session was done on Saturday, January 24, 2009. In the morning, the 18 cyclists rode from their campsite at Bay Hill Apartments, Sion Hill Bay, to King’s Hill, just above the Diamond Dairy area, and back to the campsite – approximately 12 miles. In the afternoon the local cyclists, which included two females – Netonya Richardson and Keezia Fernandez, rode around Kingstown for about one hour.

The speakers at the training camp were Keith Joseph, Trevor Bailey, Earl ‘Ole George’ Daniel and Wayne Williams from the Basketball Association who encouraged the young athletes not to give up.

The weekend exercise was crowned with a competitive race from Calliaqua to Sion Hill on Sunday, January 25. The race started at 3:15 p.m. The following are the respective results in the various categories:

First, second and third: Seniors: Albert Quammie, Peter Durrant, Terrance Sutherland, Kenute George. 4th Juniors: Schimano Bailey, Cacey DeFreitas and Lucky Antrobus. BMX: Kevin Morgan, 2nd: Alex Davis. Mountain Bike: Richard James, Kingsley Gabriel, Zimron Audain. Juvenile: only Zephal Bailey.

Overall, the first eleven were: Albert Quammie, Schimano Bailey, Cacey DeFreitas, Peter Durrant, Lucky Antrobus, Orane Andrews, Shane Cole, Terrance Sutherland, Kenute George, Mavic Bailey and Zephal Bailey. Cyclists came from Sion Hill, Cane Garden, Kingstown, Arnos Vale and Biabou. They are expected to be involved in an ongoing training schedule individually.
