Prospect runs things in Calliaqua

When it comes to Football Competitions in Calliaqua, one club has dominated proceedings now for almost two decades.

Prospect United, now Busta Prospect, which over the years has seen a number of sponsors names affixed to theirs, on Sunday, December 21, added another title to its list.{{more}}

The league title, along with cash prizes, came its way, when it beat K& R Strikers, 3-0, in the Final.

Overshadowed by the Christmas celebrations and an extended season, the final was played in front of a spattering of spectators.

A first half brace by the tournament’s top goal scorer Reginald Payne, and a second half strike from Leslo Mc Kenzie gave the perennial winner the title, $1500 and a trophy.

First, Payne, who late last year broke his way into the senior national team, drove a right footed shot that bamboozled K & R’s custodian Ossie Dennie. Minutes before the half time whistle, he pounced on a loose ball to score in an empty net.

Mc Kenzie was also the beneficiary of a mix up that resulted in his just shepherding the ball over the goal line.

But the match was not without its incidents. Referee Roger Gurley, after pointing to the spot, awarding a penalty to K& R Strikers, changed to a free kick, after consulting with his assistant referee, Maxwell Bennett.

A similar infringement occurred in almost the identical spot, and Gurley pointed to the spot, awarding Prospect a penalty.

Dissatisfied with Gurley’s decision, the K & R players were summoned off the field by their management, to which most of them complied. However, the penalty kicked by Terrance Harry went wide of the right up right, and Gurley had no choice but to blow the match off.

French Alliance took away $700 for their third place in the league.

Prospect also collected $500 for the Knock Out, after organisers decided to award it the title, as there was also a dispute in the final a few days prior involving K & R Strikers.

Prospect’s Calvert Richards and Terrence Harry, both former national players, were named the Best Defender and Midfielder, respectively.

K & R’s Dennie was voted the Best Goal Keeper, with Alex Peters, of Foundation Sounds Max Strikers, the Most Improved Player.

Head of the League’s organising committee, Foster Hannibald, during the Presentation Ceremony, admitted that the League was plagued “with lot of ill discipline”.

Hannibald was uncertain what format next year’s competition will take, granted the proposed restructuring of competitions and leagues, as being promoted by the Executive of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation. (RT)
