Ambris earns West Indies call up

Young Vincentian batsman Sunil Ambris has been selected to the West Indies Under-15 team to the Clico International tournament to be stage here in the region from April 19.{{more}}

The 15-year-old Ambris, a student of the St. Vincent Grammar School, is one of two players from the Windwards to be selected to the 14 member team. The other is Dominican Kaveem Hodge. The two made the final cut following last month’s West Indies tournament that was staged in Dominica.

Ambris’ selection came on the back of some good scores including one half century.

Ambris is the younger brother of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Windwards and Combined Campuses and Colleges opener Rommel Currency.

“It is a great feeling”, Ambris told SEARCHLIGHT from his Glenside residence last Wednesday evening.

He sees this as a stepping to his ultimate goal of representing the senior West Indies team.

“I want to play for the Windwards Under-19, then the West Indies Under-19”, the young Ambris projected.

The Form three student has cricket in his blood, as his father Walford Ambris is still active in the RBTT Premier Division of the national cricket competition.

In fact, the three have created some local cricket trivia, as they all, when available, turn out to play for Eat Rite Saints.

Sunil had an early start to the top flight of the local competition, as he made his debut at age 11.

Ambris was forced to return from Grenada prematurely on Tuesday where he was representing St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Windwards Under19 tournament. An injury to his right index caused him to miss the last round against Dominica as well as the limited overs competition.

But he aggravated the injury while keeping wicket, just another dimension of his ability. Ambris also bowls for his local club.

And to add to the mix, Ambris is an avid footballer, who represented his school last year in the secondary schools’ competition.
