Three for Carifta Games

Three athletes will carry the hopes of St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the 36th Carifta Games to be held in Provincidales Turks and Caicos Islands from April 7 -9.

The three are Courtney Williams, Anneisha Anderson and Delonni Samuel. All three will compete in the Under-17 category of the Games.{{more}}

Williams and Anderson will be involved in the 100 and 200m events, while Samuel, who is based in Canada, will once again compete in the 1500 m.

Williams and Anderson, along with Coach Gideon Labban were set to leave here on Wednesday via Martinique en route to their final destination.

The other member of the Vincentian contingent, chaperone Rosmund Griffith, will join the other members from Jamaica where she is currently pursuing studies.

But the trio of athletes follows a lineage of former national athletes. Williams is the son of former shot putt and discus athlete Helen Harry-Williams, who has a Carifta medal to her name. The St. Vincent Grammar School student is also the son of former St. Vincent and the Grenadines fast bowler Carl Williams.

Anderson also has history on her side as she is niece of former sprint athlete Marvette Collis. Like Harry-Williams, Collis secured a medal at the regional athletic show piece.

Samuel, who competed last year in Guadeloupe is the son of former long distance athlete Dane Samuel and the nephew of Bigna Samuel, who also distinguished herself in long distance running, winning a gold medal for this country at the 1982 Junior Caribbean and Central American Games.
