Female cricketers regain Windies cricket title

Queens Again!

St. Vincent and the Grenadines wrested the title of League queens of regional cricket last week in St. Lucia.

Under the new banner of the West Indies Cricket Board, the Vincentians dethroned last year’s holders Trinidad and Tobago to regain the crown they first won in 2004.{{more}}

The local women rebounded from a loss to Barbados by 114 runs in the opening match.

SVG recorded one of their lowest totals 89 all out responding to Barbados’ 203 for 8.

On the rebound, SVG scored 175 against Trinidad and Tobago. Cordell Jack hit 50. The Trinidadians were dismissed for 160.

It was this head to head meeting that earned St. Vincent and the Grenadines the title, as both teams finished with ten points.

The Vincentians also defeated Grenada. The Spice Islanders’ 181 proved insufficient as Julianna Nero 51, carved out a win for the Vincentians, who reached 183 for 5.

Although their encounter with St. Lucia was rained out, SVG went on to gain full points from Jamaica. Jean Blutcher made 56 not out as SVG piled up 172 for 4 in 45 overs. Jamaica was shot out for 87.

While the Vincentians were having it their way, the other title hopeful Trinidad and Tobago also had their match against Grenada rained out.

Jamaica finished third on nine points, with St. Lucia and Barbados six points each and Grenada three points.

SVG’s quest to do the double again eluded them, beaten by Barbados. SVG got to the final of the elimination phase with a second triumph over Jamaica. SVG scored 212 for 9, and stopped the Jamaicans’ innings at 175.

SVG posted 103 all out against Barbados. This was erased easily by their opponents who reached 107 for 3.

Manager of the local squad Genita Lewis had high commendation for her charges whom she said were good ambassadors on and off the field.

Coach Cleton Burnette’s first time at the helm of the women’s cricket set up, expressed similar sentiments at the team’s arrival last Tuesday morning.

The fourteen member squad and the officials were afforded VIP treatment and were met by Minister of Sports Glen Beache, Acting Director of Sports and Physical Education St. Clair Bramble and President of the Windward Island Cricket Board and West Indies Cricket Board Director Lennox John.
