All eyes on Kineke at NCAA

Vincentian star athlete Kineke Alexander is quickly becoming the topic of discussion in US athletic circles.

The junior athlete who recently left here to join Iowa State University was thrown onto the tracks last Friday, in a literal “swim with the sharks” event to compete against the strongest college competitors in the United States. {{more}}

Putting up a strong fight against much older and experienced athletes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Indoor Championship at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Arkansas, Alexander registered 53.24 to finish third in her heat in the preliminary round.

One of only two junior athletes to reach the finals and the only one to finish the event, she stunned athletic coaches after finishing the quarter mile event in a dazzling 54.06 to hold on to the sixth place position for Iowa State. She is now considersd among the elite rank of athletes dubbed All American on the college circuit.

Though the young athlete produced a spectacle of a performance she was outclassed by Florida State All American Star Tiandra Ponteen who nipped the thread in a time of 50.91. Hazel Ann Regis of Louisiana State University was second in 50.92 while South Carolina’s Stephanie Smith clocked 52.54 for a third place.

The Vincentian athlete’s times have established a new local record for her over the distance.
