Credit unions are co-operative organisations that are created for members, by members. As such, they stand for the principles of one member/one vote, commitment to service, not for profit, and social responsibility.

Throughout the world, credit unions have given people the opportunity to belong to a financial institution guided by open membership, democratic control, and member education. This is truly a reason to celebrate. {{more}}

Over forty thousand (40,000) members of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Credit Union Movement join co-operators around the world in celebrating Credit Union Week from Sunday 16th to Saturday 22nd October 2005. This annual commemoration brings people together to reflect on their co-operative history, their credit union achievements, and to promote the credit union idea around the world.

The theme of this year’s celebration “Credit Unions: Members Make It Happen” focuses on the foundation of the credit union structure, its members, and captures the important role that they play in helping credit unions promote economic, social and democratic development.

The St. Vincent Co-operative Credit Union League is the national apex body of credit unions. Its mission is to strengthen, integrate and promote the sustainable growth and development of the Co-operative Sector in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. At present, the ten member credit unions of the League are as follows:

• Georgetown/Mt.Coke Methodist Co-operative Credit Union

• General Employees’ Co-operative Credit Union

• Kingstown Co-operative Credit Union

• Marriaqua Co-operative Credit Union

• South Rivers Co-operative Credit Union

• SVUT Co-operative Credit Union

• SVG Police Co-operative Credit Union

• ULP Co-operative Credit Union

• Workers and Farmers Co-operative Credit Union.

In August 2005, the credit union sector in St. Vincent and the Grenadines marked a milestone with the opening of the Co-operative League Centre, the headquarters of the League, at Kingstown Park.
