Windwards beat up on Leewards in three days

The Windward Islands senior men’s cricket team has comfortably earned a spot in the semi-final of the West Indies Cricket Board’s four-day regional cricket tournament.{{more}}

This, after beating up on the Leewards by 197 runs last Sunday at the Grenada National Stadium, with a day to spare.

Set an imposing 360 to win, the Leewards crumbled for 162. They were undone by the bowling of Liam Sebastian, who bagged 7 for 49 and Kenroy Peters, 2 for 45.

Only Kieran Powell with 54 at the top of the order and Tonito Willett, 41, lower down, added any respectability to the Leeward’s vain run chase.

When the match got started on Friday, the Windwards crafted 292.

Rommel Currency made 76, in which he struck 12 fours; his younger brother Sunil Ambris, who is having a good outing in his debut season at the first class level, compiled 53.

Devon Smith smashed nine fours in his 47 and Keddy Lesporis contributed 30.

Bowling for the Leewards, Kieran Powell grabbed 3 for 38, Gavin Tonge, 2 for 46, Anthony Martin, 2 for 62 and Yannick Leonard, 2 for 74. Devon Thomas, though, held six catches behind the wickets.

The Leewards innings closed at 171 for 9, as Jahmar Hamilton was unable to bat.

The prime scorers for the Leewards were Devon Thomas, 44 and Orlando Peters, 41.

Shane took 2 for 19 and with Nelon Pascal, 2 for 36, saw the Windwards establish a healthy lead of121 runs.

Batting a second time, the Windwards made 238. Devon Smith led the scoring with 77 and Keddy Lesporis had 42.

Anthony Martin with a fiver – 5 for 59 and Gavin Tonge, 3 for 55, topped the bowling for the Leewards.

The win pushed to the Windwards to 62 points. The Windwards play the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) from this Friday at the Arnos Vale Playing Field.
