Maple, Mitres share Division One Netball spoils

Vita Malt Maple clinched the 2012 Division One Knockout title of the Digicel National Club Tournament, when they distanced last year’s champions, Western Union Mitres, last Monday evening at the Kingstown Netball Centre.{{more}}

Maple led in all quarters 16-13, 35-25, 49-35 and closed off the match 62-48.

For Maple, Skiddy Francis Crick poured in 48 of her 56 attempts, Thelma Foster registered 13 of her 15 and Janet Toney scored 1 from 6.

Gailene Gordon netted 41 of her 48 attempts, while Shelisa Davis scored 4 of 7 and Gishelle Peters 3 of 7, in a losing cause for Mitres.

This means that both teams, the current gurus of local Netball, have to share the spoils in Division One, with Mitres taking the league championship, as was the case in 2010.

In 2011, Mitres took both titles, leaving Maple empty-handed.

Monday’s final put the cover on the 2012 tournament.

The formalities took place at a Presentation and Closing Ceremony.

For yet another year, the Most Valuable Player of the Senior Division title was gulped up by Vasha Adams of Vita Malt Maple. Adams was also adjudged the Best Defender among the seniors, an award she is slowly patenting.

The Most Valuable Player of the Junior Division was Naomi Williams of French Verandah X- Ceed. She also took the title of the Best Defensive Player among the Juniors.

Nicole Sandy Stevenson of Mitres was named the Best Mid Court Player in the Senior category and in the Junior Division, the recipient was Kashukie Daniel, also of French Verandah X- Ceed.

Saska Diamond of Vita Malt Maple was voted the Best Attacking Player.

Among the shooters, Skiddy Francis-Crick, for the umpteenth time, recorded the Best Shooting Average and scored the most goals in the Senior Division.

Dutch Lady Clinchers’ Kadijah Williams, an emerging player, scored the Most goals in the Junior Division.

Green Hill Sports Club, which competed in Division 3, was voted the Most Improved Team and Division 4 double crowned champions, Netters Netball Club, secured the Most Disciplined Team award.

The Most Valuable Player of each of the participating teams was awarded with a trophy for her achievement.

A trophy was also presented to Rochelle Franklyn of ASCO by a spectator who was impressed with her play during this year’s tournament.

Immediate Past President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association Godfrey Harry handed over a laptop computer to the current executive, a donation he procured during his tenure.

Maple 2 was crowned double champions in Division 3, while C & R Enterprises Sion Hill took the Division 2 of the league competition and Hill View, the Knockout.

Following the Carnival celebrations, the Executive of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association will turn its attention to the Firms and Industrial Tournament, set for the latter part of September.(RT)
