Canine Transmissible Venereal Disease

One of the most frequently seen venereal diseases that affects our canine friends here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is referred to as Canine Transmissible Venereal Disease.

This disease is a cancerous one, where the cancerous cells are found on the base of the penis in cases of the males and on the vaginal wall of the female.{{more}}

During my training in Cuba, I had the opportunity to see first hand a large number of CTVD cases.

Here at home the number of cases of Canine Transmissible Venereal Disease is more commonly seen within the local breed population. This is due to the level of exposure resulting from uncontrolled mating.

No dog (adult or puppy) is immune to this disease and so this explains why all are prone to develop such a complication that affects their reproductive lives.

This disease is spread during mating. If the male or female acquires this disease, it’s passed on to others during mating.

Canine Transmissible Venereal Disease can be prevented and controlled once proper measures are in place.
