To win in the marketplace you must win in the workplace

When last you had a staff pulse survey? A former Campbell’s Soup CEO, Doug Conant, once said “To win in the marketplace you must first win in the workplace.” In other words, to be successful, you must first have those on the inside on board.

Talks about employee engagement have been around for decades, however, not many businesses give thoughtful consideration to the subject. This may be because of the misconception surrounding what employee engagement is. In today’s article we will touch on what employee engagement is not, what it is and how it can benefit your organization.

Employee engagement is not employee happiness. Numerous studies over the years have sought to find a link between happiness and business performance but have failed. An employee may be happy on the job but not productive. Also, employee engagement is not employee satisfaction. Actually, studies have shown that an employee can use some level of dissatisfaction to fuel his/her passion and drive.

“Employee Engagement is the emotional commitment the employee has to the organization and its goals.” In an OPIN article titled “Engaged vs. Disengaged Employees”, they said “engaged employees see their job as an opportunity. They combine a strong, intelligent work ethic with the desire to not only improve their circumstances, but the circumstances of those around them. They are the embodiment of a creative force.

On the other hand, “disengaged employees must be motivated to perform on an hourly basis. They drag themselves through their day, contributing the bare minimum and often detracting from the work of their peers with negative comments, or an overwhelming pessimism that is energy draining. This pessimism is so toxic that it affects not only co-workers, but customers as well, driving away potential business and harming previously solid customer relationships.”

So why do business owners overlook the benefits of engaged employees and focus all their attention to attracting new customers? Only they can answer that. Employees who are engaged stay longer with your company. They work faster and harder. They find reasons to be on the job instead of being absent and they contribute greatly to business bottom line.
