Delta Air Lines ends non-stop flights to AIA in September

Delta Air Lines is ending its non-stop service between Atlanta and St Vincent, eliminating a route that had brought a major new U.S. gateway to one of the Caribbean’s fastest-growing destinations.

The airline’s final flight to Argyle International Airport on St. Vincent and the Grenadines will depart September 5, from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, a Delta spokesperson told The Independent. Delta said it is working to rebook passengers who had flights schedule after that date.

The flight had most recently been operating once weekly. The cancellation is a significant setback for St Vincent and the Grenadines, which has spent the last several years expanding its hotel sector, attracting new airlines and generating record-breaking visitor growth.

Delta launched the route in December 2025, marking the airline’s first ever service to SVG and giving the destination a non-stop link to the carrier’s vast Atlanta hub. The airline initially operated the route daily during the winter season before continuing it on a reduced weekly schedule. The route is no longer scheduled to return after Sept. 5.

The arrival of Delta was considered an important milestone for St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Atlanta is one of the world’s largest airline hubs, with connecting service from cities across the United States. The route opened St Vincent to a much wider group of travellers, particularly those coming from the Southeast, Midwest and western United States.

It also gave the destination another major U.S. carrier alongside American Airlines and JetBlue, both of which operate non-stop flights to St Vincent from the United States.

Delta’s entry reflected the rapid expansion of St Vincent’s tourism industry following years in which the destination had comparatively limited non-stop service from its most important source markets.

The flight also provided another option for reaching the wider Grenadines, including Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island. Travellers arriving at Argyle International Airport can connect to the islands by regional flight, ferry or private charter.

The cancellation comes during a period of unprecedented growth for the destination.

St Vincent and the Grenadines surpassed 100,000 stay over visitors for the first time in 2024, finishing the year with 101,471 arrivals. The total represented a 25 percent increase over 2023 and a 39 percent improvement compared to 2019.

The growth continued in 2025. Stay over arrivals increased 12.9 percent during the first quarter compared to the same period in the previous year, giving St Vincent and the Grenadines one of the highest growth rates in the Caribbean.

By the end of the first half of 2025, arrivals were up 17.3 percent, while traffic from the United States had risen 58.7 percent year over year.

Much of the growth followed the opening of the 301-room Sandals Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, which debuted in 2024 and quickly raised the destination’s profile in the United States.

Delta originally announced the Atlanta–St Vincent route in April, 2025 as part of a broader expansion in the Caribbean and Latin America.

The airline began daily flights on December 20, 2025, using Boeing 737-800 aircraft with First Class,

Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin seating. The original daily schedule was planned to operate through April 12.

The carrier subsequently retained the flight at a reduced once-weekly frequency, extending the route through the summer.

The September 5 departure will bring the service to an end less than nine months after its launch.

Delta has not indicated whether the route could return during a future winter season.

Delta’s hub allowed travellers from dozens of U.S. cities to reach St Vincent with one connection on the same airline. Without the Atlanta route, many passengers will have

fewer itinerary choices and maybneed to connect through Miami, New York or another Caribbean gateway.

The cancellation also leaves the destination more dependent on a smaller number of airlines at a time when its hotel inventory and visitor numbers are growing. (Caribbean Journal & Independent.UK)
