Foreign Office issues fresh travel advice to UK tourists visiting SVG
The United Kingdom Foreign Office has issued fresh travel advice for St Vincent and the Grenadines in a new alert. The FCDO has posted “new information about risks of crime, including in public areas”.
The update on Thursday, April 23, comes via the FCDO ‘Crime’ and ‘Safety and security’ page. The FCDO said: “Most visits are trouble-free, but there have been crimes including murder, armed robbery and assault.
“There has been an increase in gang-related murders involving guns. Some incidents have taken place in populated and public areas.” Take precautions such as avoiding isolated areas, including beaches, after dark, the FCDO said.
It added that UK tourists should take particular care around large gatherings, including street and beach parties, especially after dark or during the festival season, keeping valuables secure and out of sight and making sure your accommodation is secure, including if you’re staying on a yacht.
Take care when walking alone off main roads and taking money from ATMs – and only use licensed taxis. The FCDO said: “Do not carry large amounts of cash or jewellery. If possible, leave valuables and travel documents in a safety deposit box or hotel safe”.
“St Vincent and the Grenadines’ Vincy Mas carnival takes place in early July. Theft and opportunistic crime may increase during carnival. Only use licensed taxis and take particular care at late-night street parties,” the advisory also states.
“Do not leave drinks unattended. You should be cautious at crowded events and have a clear plan to get home safely after an evening out.”
It adds: “There are severe penalties for all drug offences. Pack your own luggage and do not carry anything through customs for anyone else.
“It’s illegal for anyone, including children, to dress in camouflage clothing.
“Attitudes towards the LGBT+ community are mostly conservative throughout the Caribbean. LGBT+ travellers should be aware that they may receive unwanted and negative attention when showing affection in public. Some same-sex sexual activity is illegal.” (BriminghamLive)
