Prime Minister Drew Salutes St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force New Recruits
Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr. Terrance Drew
Press Release
March 13, 2026

Prime Minister Drew Salutes St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force New Recruits

Basseterre, Saint Kitts, March 13, 2026 (SKNIS) — Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, delivered the featured remarks at the Passing Out Ceremony for recruits of the St. Kitts–Nevis Defence Force Basic Military Training Course 1 of 2025, commending the newly commissioned soldiers for their discipline, perseverance, and commitment to national service.

The ceremony was held on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at the Elquemedo Willett Park on Nevis and marked the successful completion of months of rigorous military training for the recruits, who have now officially joined the ranks of the St. Kitts–Nevis Defence Force. In a historic milestone for the Federation’s military, it marked the first time the Basic Military Training Course and the Passing Out Ceremony were held on the island of Nevis.

Addressing the recruits, Prime Minister Drew reflected on their journey from civilians to soldiers, highlighting the physical, mental, and emotional challenges they overcame during their training.

“Months ago, you were civilians, each bringing your own hopes, ambitions, and expectations,” the prime minister stated. “Through the rigours of this basic military course, you have been challenged physically, mentally and emotionally. You have endured long days and demanding nights. You have learned the importance of teamwork, the value of discipline, and the strength that comes from perseverance.”

Dr. Drew emphasised the critical role the Defence Force plays in the Federation’s national security architecture, describing it as one of the nation’s most vital institutions.

“Today you stand as soldiers, members of a proud and historic institution — the St. Kitts–Nevis Defence Force. The Defence Force represents one of the most critical pillars of our national security architecture. It stands as a symbol of discipline, readiness, and unwavering loyalty to the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis,” he said.

Encouraging the new soldiers to uphold the nation’s values, Dr. Drew reminded them of the importance of the Federation’s national motto, “Country Above Self.”

“By stepping forward to serve, you embody that principle. You have answered the call to protect and defend your beloved country and accepted the responsibility of standing on the front lines of national service,” Prime Minister Drew added.

Among those in attendance at Thursday’s ceremony were Her Excellency the Governor-General, Dame Marcella Liburd, who inspected the parade of the newly commissioned soldiers; Deputy Governor-General for Nevis, Her Honour Hyleta Liburd; Deputy Prime Minister, Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley; Premier of Nevis, Honourable Mark Brantley; members of the Nevis Island Administration, and family members and friends of the graduating soldiers.

The Passing Out Ceremony marked a significant milestone for the recruits and reaffirmed the continued commitment of the St. Kitts–Nevis Defence Force to safeguarding the peace, security, and stability of the Federation.
