Only 1000 new workers added to road cleaning programme, says former PM
THE APPROXIMATELY 2000 additional workers added to the Christmas Road cleaning programme this year is based on deception and a lie says Opposition Leader, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves.
He is also of the opinion that the newly sworn in opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) administration is on a deceitful path and lying about simple things.
The former prime minister said that Nigel “Nature” Stephenson was made Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Physical Planning on Tuesday December 2, and while everybody knew there was a Christmas Road cleaning programme which the former administration had already released $3 million to make possible, no one checked to make sure the programme had permission to start.
As a result, he said the programme’s duration had to be reduced from eight days to six days, and what the new administration did is lie about the issue and described it as a job creation initiative which this year attracted 7,000 instead of 5,000 people.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, the Opposition Leader stressed that the road cleaning programme has always been a supplementary income programme for people “who are doing other things and who take time off”. He said it usually attracts, among others, farmers and domestic workers who would work for eight days minimum.
