Flash flood watch in effect for SVG
Press Release
August 22, 2020

Flash flood watch in effect for SVG

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES
FROM 4:00 P.M TODAY, AUGUST 21ST 2020 UNTIL 12:00 NOON SATURDAY 22ND, 2020.

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Services issued a Flash Flood Watch for St. Vincent
and the Grenadines from 4:00 pm today, Friday, 21st August, 2020, until 12:00 noon on Saturday 22nd,
August, 2020.

Tropical Depression thirteen (13) was upgraded to Tropical Storm Laura at 9 am today and at 2:00 pm;
the centre of “Laura” was located near 17.0N, 60.8W or 175 miles east south east of the Northern
Leeward Islands.

Instability associated with “Laura” could continue to generate moderate to heavy
showers and thunderstorm activity across Saint Vincent and the Grenadines into tomorrow. In addition,
this system will generate wind speeds between 12 – 28 mph (20 – 45km/h) with higher gusts near
showers.

Some stations across St. Vincent have already recorded significant rainfall accumulations today and
there is a possibility of an additional 25mm – 50mm (approximately 1-2 inches) with isolated higher
amounts in mountainous areas into Saturday. Soils in some areas are saturated and some rivers remain
inundated.

A Flood-Watch is issued when conditions are favourable and there exists the possibility of flooding
during the watch period, however the flood watch may be upgraded to a warning if conditions warrant.

The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) urges all residents living near rivers and
streams especially persons living in areas such as Fitz-Hughes, Chateaubelair, Spring Village, Vermont,
Buccament, Rose Place, Calliaqua, Belair, Dauphine, Arnos Vale, Marriaqua, Lowmans, Greggs, South
Rivers, Dickson, Langley Park, Sandy Bay, Owia and Fancy to be vigilant.

Residents and motorist in low lying areas and areas prone to flooding and landslide are also asked to be
vigilant and exercise caution.

Small craft operators and sea bathers are also asked to exercise caution for above normal sea swells and
gusty winds as sea conditions would be moderate in open water with swells between 2.0m and 2.5m.

The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) will continue to monitor and provide
updates as necessary.
