Local Guides mark more than a century of guiding in SVG

THE GIRL Guides Association of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is today recognising their 106th anniversary since the start of Girl Guiding in SVG while also joining 10 million members world-wide in the annual celebration of World Thinking Day 2020 under the theme “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion”.

The Association said the local celebrations this year will commence today, February 2, with the annual Althea Commissiong Brownie Public Speaking Competition at the Girl Guides Headquarters in Level Gardens from 3:30 p.m. involving eight competitors.

The competition aims to empower Brownie Guides enabling them to develop self-confidence, a creative imagination, empathy, and maturity in interpersonal skills.

The topic for this year’s competition is “We are all taught to love our neighbour as ourselves. In what ways have you seen persons disobey this teaching, and how do you think each of us can try to do better?”

The competitors are drawn from the Windward Division, as far as Byera in the North; the town of Troumaca

in the Leeward Division; and several participants from the Kingstown/Grenadines Division.

They are: Kaleigh Davis of the St. Mary’s #2 Brownie Pack; Christel Sutherland of the St. Mary’s 22nd Brownie Pack; Sunisha Harry from the 1st Marriaqua Brownie Pack; and Kemora Ashton of the 1st Troumaca Brownie Pack.

Juliandra Sterling will represent the #30 Open Brownie Guides Company; Kenya Williams, the 1st Evesham Brownie Pack; Ciandra Scarborough will do battle for the #13 CWPPS Brownie Pack; and Rolicia Alvis is the representative for the 1st Pamelus Burke Government School Brownie Pack On World Thinking Day, February 22, the Bim Bims, Brownie Guides, Girl Guides, Ranger Guides, Young Leaders and Guiders of the Association will have the Thinking Day Parade starting at 1:45pm from the area in front of the Saint Vincent Building and Loan Association in full uniform. The parade will move through the streets of Kingstown from 2:15 p.m. to the Russell’s Auditorium.
