Law and Grace

EDITOR: Recently I ventured into giving working definitions of both law and grace in an effort to dispel thoughts of any friction between them.I had earlier concluded that the law is the engine that propels our salvation and grace is the ignition that sets the rotor in motion.

Let’s take a close look at the giving of the law in Exodus 20. It begins ‘ And God spake all these words saying… God, not Moses. It may come as a shock to some ( who bisect God into three and teach that God the Father was law oriented but God the Son was grace driven,) that Jesus was the lawgiver. Isaiah 33:22 reads ‘ For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our King; He will save us. Let’s not trip on words here: who will save us? Who do we all say is the saviour ?

Isaiah 9: 6 establishes that Jesus was the everlasting father and the prince of peace. The government shall be upon his shoulder. In Matthew 28 : 18 Jesus declared that All power was given to Him in heaven and earth.He resumed His place, sitting at the right hand of God, King of all creation.

Let’s return to the giving of the law. In Exodus 34:6 and 7 God before placing His covenant ( testament) on stone revealed Himself to Moses, ‘ and the Lord passed by before him and proclaimed, The Lord,The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin …..( GRACE). This was before the giving of the tables of stone. In Exodus 20 this message of grace is spoken by God in verses 6 and 7. In 1 John 4, we are asked to test the teachings, the mindsets ( spirits) to see if they are of God. Hereby know you the spirit of God: Every spirit that teaches that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus is come in the flesh IS NOT OF GOD.

Jesus came to do the will of the Father. ( Hebrews10: 7)
