Change for non-pensionable workers is commendable

EDITOR: The recent bill passed in the house by this new administration where the non- pensionable workers will now work to age 65 so that on retirement they would receive an NIS pension is commendable and a good one. The government must be complimented. There is an injustice created by this administration that needs to be urgently dealt with, and that is the non-contributory pension from the NIS. Previously, both the NIS Pension and the public assistance was equal.

But with the raising of the public assistance to $500 as was promised during the campaign, it has left the NIS pensioners at a disadvantage.

We know that the public assistance list would be cut in order to be able to maintain the amount that is paid. We also realize there would be a reduction in assistance given by the social welfare department.

But to have those NIS pensioners still at the present amount that they are receiving while, those on public assistance are receiving far more is indeed an injustice. I,therefore, call upon the CEO of the NIS and the government to have this rectified as soon as possible. These pensioners would have given many years of service to this country and would have made some contributions to the NIS, but now they have to be satisfied with something lower than those who are simply receiving money from Government as a handout.

It is time to have this change made on behalf of the NIS pensioners. The people would love you for this one as well.
