Activism and Advocacy sorely needed in SVG
The [recent] press conference held by lawyer Carlos James, is an example of the activism and advocacy we cry out for here in St.Vincent and the Grenadines. It brought to centre stage police brutality and injustice.
Once again, I reference Jamaica where a brutal shooting by police a few days ago, was denounced by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
Jamaica has the advantage of INDECOM- the Independent Commission of Investigations which has power to investigate and submit files to the Director of Public Prosecution. There is also a vigilant human rights group, Jamaicans for Justice.
Since 2024 in Jamaica, 65 law enforcement officers have been charged in relation to incidents investigated by INDECOM.
