Help needed for men!

EDITOR: Before I get into my topic, let me take this opportunity to apologize for the omission of three doctors from North Leeward in my article of January 24th, 2025, after the publication is was brought to my attention. These patriots are: Dr. William Landreth Cummings of Chateaubelair, (Uncle of the late Andrew Cummings), Dr. Carlos Mulraine, and Dr. Timothy Providence of Troumaca and has roots in Rose Bank. These three gentlemen were island scholars indicating their educational prowess, from as early as 1936 with Dr. Cummings. This was 14 years after the biennial Island Scholarship awards in 1922.

Abuse of Both Sexes and Children Present Amongst Us.

There are often times [when]more emphasis [is placed]on Women and Children being abused, and we seldom talk about men being abused by ladies.

Unbelievable, but true is that it is a reality amongst men.

Now the physical abuse may not be as much in men as it is in women, but, if we are honest we would not deny that many men go through abuse. The sad thing is that men many times have to deal with it in silence until they cannot bear it any more, then some may react violently.

Now, reacting violently should not be encouraged and should be condemned.

However, we ought to understand the reason for his reaction.

There are many forms of abuse that a man faces. Verbal abuse is a very popular one. Often times the man has to deal with these [episodes of]abuse on a regular basis. Men are often times seen as the one at fault by the ladies.

Emotional abuse, is a spill-off from verbal abuse. But, it is not only a spill-off from verbal abuse, but can come from various things including, where the man feels he is just being used and it is not loved by his partner. The list can go on and on.

Psychological abuse where the men feel as though they are inferior and [of] less value to their female partners. Many times they have to endure the abuse and have to live with it or try to deal with it. But like anything, there comes a time when a person reaches his limit and can’t bear it any more and reacts, sometimes violently.

In this society when men face abuse they seem not to have any avenue to let it out, except to their male friends at times who may be facing similar situation and may encourage each other to deal with it in a violent way.

Many men also are afraid to talk since they would be laughed at and sometimes look down upon as weak. So, the mentality is that he as a man must act and deal with her. Now violence of no kind should ever be encouraged. Avenues must be created for men to report their abuse and have it looked at seriously rather than encouraging them. Police must seriously take their complaints and have it dealt with. Men must be encouraged to talk about it and not be looked down upon.

The gender affairs must be balanced, in that we seldom hear of programmes and activities that cater towards our young men. No wonder there are so many men in prison, because for them, acting violently is the only way to deal with disputes, injustice, and some have been pushed to the edge where the abuse has mounted with no redress.

Let us all work together and restore relationships and peace in our nation.
