Supporting the local Productive Sector

EDITOR: There is much that can be done in the choices we make to support the local productive sector. This is a specific mindset that we must adopt if our communities are to thrive. Each must, however, make a fair contribution.

All the available animal manure can be purchased by farmers. The poultry farmers have droppings, shepherds have pen manure, and dung from cows are all valuable as plant nutrients. The scientists can determine the specific nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content and the proportion that are needed by each kind of crop to determine the dollar value. The manure must be cheap enough to the farmer and the seller must find it worthwhile.

Sports teams purchase uniforms from time to time and in most cases, they are sourced overseas. While this may appear cheaper, support of the local garment construction industries may prove more valuable to the community. Additionally, the local tailor is always available and could make a uniform at short notice.

Fashion shows, and queen shows should generate more interest if the garments are locally made. Too much is expended overseas for school bags, and local production of an equal quality must be encouraged.

Live music for functions such as weddings, and graduations will generate much needed income for our musicians and we must budget for such. Local drummers and dancers too, can find a booking for these occasions. The appearance fees should be reasonable.

Coconut water and local juices should be the main drinks made available. Since the efforts of the Diamond Diary years ago, apparently little effort has been made to utilize the abundant available fruits. The schools are the largest market for drinks, and coconut water should be allowed to take its place there.

The foods we consume must be decorated with local vegetables. The chicken and chips should have their complement of greens. Our foods are laced with too much sugar, fat, and salt. We must find a way to flavour foods so that we help to prevent lifestyle diseases that plague us. The greater demand for vegetables generated can be filled by farmers with adequate forecasting information provided by our Information savvy marketing people.

Knowledge is power and we would better support our local industries if we are convinced of their value to our communities. Reading our local newspapers can keep producers in touch with consumers and establish a valuable symbiotic relationship.
