Succession planning – Is there a need for it?

Editor: What really is succession planning?

Does succession planning evolve naturally or it’s just a random way of nature and life?{{more}}

From the Oxford Dictionary, succession planning is a strategic organized operation to ensure continuity, progress and perpetuation of anything, whether it’s life or business.

In the animal kingdom, the alpha animal, be it male or female, trains and guides for succession and survival of the species. Similarly it was with the early human being.

In succession planning, timing is very important, along with a number of other things and if these are not taken into consideration when planning for succession, a business, organization, family, government, church etc could find itself struggling to survive. Sometimes this is the major failure that causes absorption, amalgamation, collapse, stagnation or complete obliteration.

At present in the island state of ours, it is very obvious that very few if not all areas of life do not observe the confusion, chaos, and problems that take place in the Public Service, at school, in church, in Government and opposition, sporting organizations, and the list goes on.

Some people don’t want to leave, some don’t know how and when to leave. Some are fearful, while some are never readily prepared for the inevitable. Thus the malaise continues.

For me, succession planning is something that we have to embrace, whether we like it or not, and the sooner we come to realize the importance and work to enhance it, the more it will be beneficial to all.
