God is perfect; perfection has no room for changes

Editor: As a young man, I always pondered the thought behind a certain song that I hear the religious people sing. It goes this way: “Every chapter in the Bible is mine, every verse, every word, every line….” The confusion arises whenever I hear the same people distancing themselves from the counsel and practices attached to some of the same verses by ascribing them to the Jews.{{more}} A friend once told me that the most lies that people tell, are told through their singing. Some will refuse to entertain certain ideas supported by the Bible, with the escape mechanism, that they are not interested in religion, they are only interested in Christ. The concise Oxford dictionary defines religion as….’one of the prevalent systems of faith and worship, human recognition of superhuman controlling power…’ Are these people saying that they are not careful about anything to do with God ? Is it a matter of worship of God not taking preeminence in their lives?

Paul the apostle counselled the young Timothy to ‘Preach the word, be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lust shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears; and shall turn away their ears from hearing the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.’ 2 Timothy 4:2-4. The wise man Solomon admonished us to seek wisdom… ‘Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom, and with thy getting get understanding.’

Any good manufacturer would provide a manual for the correct usage of his product. God made our bodies and He has provided a manual for getting the very best out of them. Some of my friends would lift 1 Timothy 4:4,5 out of context, as Peter in 2 Peter 3: 16 says they will do, ‘sanctify and purify themselves’ as Isaiah says they will do in Isaiah 66:17 with the coming consequence of their own destruction. The text reads: ‘For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it is received with thanksgiving. For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.’ The text is referring to creatures set apart (sanctified) by the word of God for our usage, if they are not sanctified but the word of God, they can in no wise be sanctified by your prayers.

In Deuteronomy 14: 3,4 the manual cautions us ‘Thou shalt not eat any abominable thing. These are the beasts which ye shall eat.’ (If you are really interested, read the chapter for yourself. I know the honest seeker of truth will.) Leviticus 11:11 had echoed it earlier. ‘They shall be even an abomination to you; ye shall not eat their flesh but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.’ There is also a traditional text which says that God told Peter that he must not call anything that He has made unclean. I say traditional because there is no such text in the Bible. God told Peter not to refer to any man as common and unclean, the text actually says, call nothing that I have cleansed, not made, yes cleansed. This reminds me to hammer home the point that I made earlier, that not one person outside of Israel was a part of the early church. Peter had told Cornelius that it was unheard of any Jew keeping company with a stranger before, and this was years after Pentecost. God sent him this vision so as to have him receive the messengers sent by Cornelius. Acts 10: 15, 28.

In Malachi God says “I am The Lord; I change not…’ God may change His judgements against us based on our repentance, but He will never compromise His Laws. Remember they are perfect and result in our conversion. We are the ones needing change. God is perfect. Perfection has no room for changes. God is infinitely perfect.

So, until next week, if the perfect God allows my existence, turn your eyes upon Jesus and let Him change you into what He wants you to be.
