Why make laws?

Fri Feb 27, 2015

Editor: The making of laws is to me a painstaking activity. The legislators would spend many hours in discussion and making adjustments in many areas of the piece of legislation that they think is necessary to bring the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines into line. These are people who have families with whom they would rather spend time, but they choose to spend quality hours trying to enhance St Vincent and the Grenadines.{{more}}

My main problem is that those who are supposed to make sure that these laws are adhered to, just stand by and watch people breaking the laws without enforcing them. I am especially referring here to the law that deals with the wearing of seat belts. I do not think that a lot of our drivers understand what the law entails, or they are just not concerned about anybody or anything. I say this because I see them breaking the seat belt law every day, especially the minibus drivers. The bad thing is that right in front of the traffic police officers, this law means nothing to them. There are some drivers that the police sometimes stop and ask them to put on their seat belt and others they just allow to get away.

What kind of message are we sending to the younger ones? Is it that the laws of this country mean nothing, just a waste of time and money?

Sad, very sad! For instance, if they have to go to another country where the seat belt law is taken seriously, they would have to comply with the laws of the land or face the consequences.

So, let us be serious about our responsibilities and make sure that we set a good example for the young ones coming up, so that they live to be good, law-abiding citizens of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
