PM Gonsalves, over to you, sir

Tue, Jul 17. 2012

Editor: RE SEARCHLIGHT ARTICLE “EMPRESS A BIT SAD AFTER CARNIVAL SUCCESS”- page 19 of July 13, 2012 edition.

When I penned and posted the pieces “Absentee Winners: They Went Back Home” and “Charge Empress With Highway Robbery”, I had not a clue that Vincentians, other than Ralph Gonsalves’ mouthpieces on radio and Madam Jean, were publicly displaying this sick attitude towards Vincentian citizens living abroad.{{more}}

At the time the pieces were written, they were intended to show the emerging power of Vincentians – particularly women – in the Diaspora. At the time, I fully expected the ULP operatives on radio to frown on the outstanding performances of Fya Empress and Joy C. I never thought this attitude was widespread.

Now the teachings of the ULP radio hosts seems to have become an integral part of the Education Revolution.

What is sad about all this, is the fact that the behaviour of ULP radio hosts is always brought to the attention of Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, but it seems he takes no corrective action.

As I recall, it started in June 2009 with a senior government Minister. One gets the impression that it is official ULP policy, based on similar statements made by other radio show hosts. Their latest frontal attacks are directed at Kenton Chance, a Vincentian Journalist studying in Taiwan and this writer.

As an activist for over 40 years, I can take it. I survived attacks from the Manitoba Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and was successful in having a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal close the organization down after five days of hearings. However, I feel very badly for Fya Empress, who is an entertainer contributing to the promotion of her homeland, SVG.

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves must take immediate action to educate and order his radio mouthpieces to stop the dotishness which seems to be spreading like wild fire in the country. This sick attitude towards Diasporic Vincentians must end.

Our brothers and sisters at home seem to be sending the message that our barrels and Western Union transfers should keep coming, but we should keep our views on SVG affairs in the Diaspora.

Prime Minister Gonsalves, over to you, Sir.
