How will the new broom sweep?

THE 2026 – 2027 academic school year is already in train and students, educators, parents, guardians and government officials, are stitching all facets of the system together to ensure the best emerges over the next eleven months.

Like everything else, change is inevitable and in place within the administration of sports within the schools’ set up is a relatively new Coordinator of Sports.

Equally, there is a new configuration, as a different political directorate is at the helm, likewise a new Minister of Youth, Sports, Culture and the Creative Industries.

But as term one gets going, much will be centered on the execution of the schools’ sporting competitions, and more, so on the output of Roxell John, who leads the charge in his capacity of Coordinator of Sports.

John who began his tour of duty officially on May 4, 2026, has been always fingered and touted as the most suitable individual to occupy the position.

He was always a popular candidate, but was handpicked after five months following the installation of the new government.

John, who worked previously as Sports Coordinator at the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, was pivotal in the visibility and effort of the college’s sports programme.

As part of his tenure at the tertiary institution, John developed the Applied Associate Degree in Sports Sciences, thus suggesting he has a record of building programmes rather than simply maintaining them.

Already, elements of John’s modus operandi are evident, as that constant engagement via press releases keeps everyone who cares and needs to know, in the loop.

But with all the plaudits experience and successes accrued over the years, the acid test is imminent for John, as scrutiny abounds.

The reality lies given the many nuances that exist within the government’s mechanisms, if John can in the shortest possible time frame convert his ideas, expertise, and exposure in multiple sporting spheres, into visible transformation of the division that he heads.

Also, if he can turn things around, where measurable results from athletes are realized.

Therefore, from the jump next Monday, September 14, 2026, when the schools’ Cross- Country event is convened, the microscope will be in full throttle as those who have been critical about the operations of the division over the years, will have their tentacles out to critique the new broom.

First impressions are lasting, hence one will be looking for the conspicuous, marked change in the way things are done.

Execution of the various competitions is paramount, thus John and company will have to deliver and do so with much aplomb.

This is the order of the day, as the fast -food mentality is in full effect, demanding instant results, irrespective of the uncontrollable variables.

No one cares these days about what went before as the climate of expectancy seems to have overtaken reasoning and feasibility.
