Central Kingstown group threatens legal action
THE POSSIBILITY EXISTS that the Ministry of Social Welfare, Community Empowerment, Disaster Management, and National Heritage can have legal action brought against it by the Central Kingstown Development Organization (CKDO).
This according to CKDO President Leroy Rock who claims that several items owned by the CKDO are missing from the Redemption Sharpes Community Centre while others have seemingly been confiscated by the Ministry even as the CKDO can prove ownership.
According to Rock, the issue involves two desks, several benches, a filing cabinet (with records). two printers, ten chairs, a coffee machine and miscellaneous items.
Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT on Monday, July 27, Rock said since the Unity Labour Party (ULP) was voted out of office in November 2026, he has been in a sort of back and forth with the Ministry over use of the Community Centre and the ownership of some of the contents at the facility.
He said the CKDO used to be allowed use of the Centre under the Unity Labour Party (ULP) administration, but that courtesy has not been extended under the New Democratic Party (NDP) government. He says that although the organization has accepted “defeat” in not being able to use the centre, what the CKDO is unwilling to accept is what appears to be the confiscation of several pieces of property which were paid for with CKDO funds.
