Injured Madzzart bows out of Soca Monarch
Former Soca Monarch Reon ‘Madzzart’ Primus has bowed out of the 2026 competition finals after he injured his shoulder last Friday, June 26, 2026, when he accidentally fell off the stage at Carnival City, Independence Park, formerly Victoria Park in Kingstown, when he appeared as a guest artiste during the calypso semifinals.
“ I don’t think my shoulder has the capacity to execute a song that requires a lot of arm to be rendered,” Madzzart told SEARCHLIGHT as he assured fans that he still would be defending his Calypso title.
Unaware of being injured, he continued to perform. It was after he exited the stage and the pain in his shoulder intensified that he sought medical assistant at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, located just across the street from the Park where the incident occurred.
“Calypso is a different thing. I mean, I could sing calypso with one hand. I could sing calypso with a mic stand and make it work, but not Soca. Soca requires a lot of body movement, especially the kind of Soca I have.”
Madzzart, who dislocated his left shoulder during the fall, won the Soca Monarch crown in 2003. He also took the Ragga Soca title twice- in 2001, and again in 2009.
He is the reigning Calypso monarch, having also won back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025.
