Young Calypsonians among the Big Guns
Four Junior Calypsonians who are part of the calypso tent action have, during this week, faced the judges in the Calypso Tent preliminaries for a chance of making it to the Big Yard in the calypso semi-finals carded for ‘Fantastic Friday’ June 26, 2026.
All four, one of whom is only 10-years-old, have already secured spots in the Junior Calypso finals’ “Young Voices, Big Vibes” for Tuesday, June 30.
Samiya ‘My My’ Hutchins and Amina Lucas, both of the Dorsetshire Hill Primary School, will be on stage tonight, Friday, June 12, as the Graduates Calypso Tent faces the judges. They will be performing their calypsos ‘Journey to Prosperity’, and “Good Role Models’ respectively.
The Secondary schools defending Junior Calypso Monarch Zion Lewis, of the St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown, will also perform with the big guns tonight, singing, ‘Youth Development’.
Kerieka ‘Kherie’ McCaul of the Sandy Bay Secondary School faced the judges on Wednesday with her ‘Restore Calypso’ when the Upstage Xperience Tent had their preliminaries.
The finalists in the Junior calypso were announced on Tuesday, June 10, 2026.
This year, there are only four Primary School finalists who will face the judges in the June 30 Junior competition; the other two juniors are Valiesha Johnson of the Tourama Government School with her song ‘Dollars and Sense’, and Blessing ‘Singing Blessing’ Compton of the Calder Primary School whose song is called ‘Pillars of Truth’.
Aniek ‘Calypso Flames’ Stapleton of the Evesham Methodist School won the 2025 Junior Primary Schools Calypso title.
In the Secondary Schools’ category, seven persons made it to the Junior Secondary finals list to come up against Zion. The other artistes are defending Junior Soca Monarch Princess Alexcia ‘Lexi’ Deshong of the Sandy Bay Secondary, who will be singing ‘I cry’, as well as her schoolmate Jolicia Byron with her ‘Good Old Calypso’.
The SJCK has three competitors in the Secondary category: Ameeah Glasgow singing ‘Blessed are the Peacemakers’, and former Junior Monarchs Devine Walters, and Divyne ’ Skye ’ Walters, who will be performing ‘Mr AI’ and ’Silent Cry’ respectively.
Georgetown Secondary student Casnique Williams, will take to the “Young Voices, Big Vibes stage with her ’No Refugee’.
