Public servants were fettered under ULP, says PM Friday
PUBLIC SERVANTS under the Unity Labour Party (ULP) administration were not given the freedom to do their jobs property, Prime Minister (PM) Dr. Godwin Friday said.
He also said the way business people, such as contractors, were paid under the ULP created financial issues for those who did work for the government.
Dr. Friday made the remarks on NBC Radio on Thursday, May 7, 2026 after a caller to the morning programme said that something must be done to motivate public servants because sometimes a lot of time is wasted in getting simple tasks done.
The caller, who identified as a contractor, also said that under the former administration contractors were paid late for jobs they did leading to them having to use bank overdrafts to pay bills, and thus reducing their profits or leaving them with no profit.
Responding, Dr. Friday said his administration is looking into paying contractors and others who do work for the government within a 28 day cycle, similar to how they pay most other bills. He said also that public servants should do their jobs using their professional judgment.
