Former PM thanks God that NDP didn’t boycott Spiritual Baptist Bill
FORMER PRIME MINISTER and Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has reminded the general public that the New Democratic Party (NDP) now in government, had boycotted parliament for a “trivial reason” involving Rene Baptiste, during the legislative process of the Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day Bill.
Speaking on Star FM on May 19, 2026 Gonsalves said that several leaders and visitors from Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and Barbados had arrived in St Vincent in honour of National Spiritual Baptist Day, yesterday May 21, 2026.
Before reminding Vincentians about the NDP’s decision to boycott parliament in 2002, during the ULP’s first term, he highlighted the struggles that Spiritual Baptists had to face in relation to freedom to practice their religion in 1912.
He outlined that the colonial government banned and outlawed the religion making a criminal offence so the Spiritual Baptist could not practice their faith.
