Man jailed after stealing rum for Father’s Day

A Lowmans Leeward man, who said he stole two quarter bottles of Strong Rum “because tomorrow is Father’s Day” was sentenced to prison for three months.

Aran Spence appeared at the Serious Offences Court before Chief Magistrate, Colin John, on June 16, 2025, where he pleaded guilty that on June 14, 2025 at Kingstown, he stole two quart bottles of Sunset Strong Rum valued EC$27.12, the property of Peppa Korn supermarket, Kingstown.

Roxann Baptiste is a Guardsman security officer who is attached to Peppa Korn Supermarket.

At about 12:15 p.m on the date in question Baptiste was on duty when she saw Spence enter the supermarket and head straight to the frozen products section.

About five minutes later, a worker at the supermarket informed her that a customer saw Spence picking up two quart bottles of Sunset Strong Rum and placing them in his front pants pockets.

The customer met the officer and pointed out Spence to her. As a result, the security officer kept Spence under observation and saw him go to the frozen products section where he returned a bag of chicken feet he had picked up.

Spence walked past the cashier; the security officer approached him and requested that he remove the contents out of his front pants pockets.

Spence cooperated and he took out two quart bottles of Sunset Strong Rum from his front pants pockets.

He then told the officer that he will put them back, but the officer told Spence that the decision was not up to her. She then informed the supervisor on duty, who contacted the police.
