PM provides stats as he welcomes Guyana Military Construction team to Union Island

As Government pushes to bring normalcy to the Southern Grenadines for people affected by Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024, Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves is asking people to be patient with the rebuilding process. He has revealed that the catastrophic weather system caused approximately EC$450 million in damage.

Speaking on Thursday, March, 27, 2025 from the newly rebuilt National Emergency Management Organisation’ (NEMO) office on Union Island, the Prime Minister said the government has taken on the responsibility to rebuild every home destroyed by the hurricane, and the fact is that it has not as yet raised all the money to do so.

“…when Beryl struck, the most devastated of all the territories was this one, Union Island, far worse than Carriacou.

“Carriacou was bad, Canouan also- very bad. Mayreau, Petit St Vincent, Palm Island, the latter two islands are resort islands, and all were badly hit, terribly hit, but this one was like Armageddon,” Gonsalves told a gathering which had come together to welcome a 40-member Guyanese military construction crew.

The military men are helping with the post-Beryl rebuilding work in the Southern Grenadines, particularly, Union Island.

Providing some figures, the Prime Minister said Union Island has approximately 1300 buildings including state buildings, business places, guest houses and hotels, and about 1000 privately-owned homes.
