My teenaged daughter saved two other children from fire – Baptiste

A teenager who lived in the house where two children died in a fire in Langley Park on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, managed to save two other children from the burning building.

This is the claim of Sandy Bay resident, Lucin Baptiste, who told SEARCHLIGHT that her teenaged daughter also lived in the house at Langley Park in Georgetown, which was gutted by fire around noon on Wednesday.

While SEARCHLIGHT was at the scene of the fire, Baptiste’s daughter, Keizan Baptiste, was not there.

She explained that her daughter was taken to the Georgetown Police Station to give a statement.

The Sandy Bay mother said her 17-year-old daughter had been living at the house at Langley Park for several months now. Relating what her daughter had told her, Baptiste said “She said she was eating and then all of a sudden, she started to smell a firey scent, when she looked around, she saw smoke coming from the roof above her,” the mom said as she related what her daughter reportedly said to her.

At that point, she said her daughter forgot about eating and raised an alarm alerting the other occupants that the house was on fire.

She said her daughter also grabbed two children and ran out of the house with them. By the time that they got to safety, and others had also escaped, the house was already fully engulfed in flames.

The two children who were rescued by the teenager, were among nine children who lived in the four bedroom concrete house. An adult female who has physical disabilities was among the six adults who also lived in the house.

The toddlers who perished in the blaze were siblings, a 1-year-old boy and a 3-year-old boy. The deceased children also have an elder sister who also lived in the house. On Wednesday, that little girl was kept a distance away from the fire scene and was shielded from the public. SEARCHLIGHT was told on Wednesday that she did not yet know that her younger siblings had died in the fire. The burnt out house at Langley Park is located a short distance away from the Langley Park Government School.

Police are investigating the matter.
