Persons linking bloody 11 days to Leap Year superstition

In many cultures, including in Greece, Ukraine, Italy and St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), persons believe that a leap year brings with it bad luck. This year,2024, is a leap year and persons who believe in the leap year superstition are linking the recent spate of crime during the period Wednesday, September 25 to Saturday October 5 to it being a leap year.

The slew of unfortunate happenings as well as criminal events began on September 25 with a three-van crash along the Nelson Mandela Highway that sent 27 persons to the hospital; three of them were admitted. The crash was followed with the shooting death of Stanran “Standpipe” Stapleton of Rose Hall on September 27. Stapleton was shot and killed in Petit Bordel. Then on Sunday September 29, Curthell Lavia was shot and killed in Petit Bordel; and on Monday September 30, Elijah Creese was fatally stabbed in Calliaqua.

On Monday, September 30, 13 year old Matthew DaSouza of Fairhall was found dead on the Sion Hill beach naked from the waist down, with head injuries. Then on Tuesday October 1, a 15 year old girl was found intoxicated and unconscious at the side of the road in Dorsetshire Hill. At around 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday October 2, 2024, the body of Javier ‘Baryo’ Browne of Chateaubelair was found along the Gibson Corner road with a gunshot wound to the back, and on Tuesday, October 1, Sirdrick Garfield Ollivierre, died in hospital. He was one of the 27 persons seen at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) after the accident along the Nelson Mandela Highway in the vicinity of the Lewis Punnett Home, on Wednesday, September 25.

On Thursday morning, October 3, 2024, the community of Lowman’s Leeward, in a remote area known as Mahoe, was force to deal with the chopping death of a vendor, Devon “Lima” Holder; and on October 3,2024, a recording began making the rounds on social media showing a fight between several persons at the Langley Park Government School.

That matter is before the court.

On October 5, Martin “Jahson” James was gunned down at his home in Villa.

The 11 day period September 25 to Saturday, October 5, was indeed a bloody stretch; however speculation about ties to the number of days in the year appears to be just that- superstition.
