Teenage labourer to be sentenced today on firearm charge

A 17 year old labourer will know his fate today when he is sentenced on an illegal firearm possession charge.

Jaheem Durrant, of Lowmans Windward was arrested and charged in July, 2023 with unlawful possession of a .25 pistol without a licence issued under the Firearms Act, a police report states.

Durrant appeared before the Serious Offences Court on Monday, January 8, 2024 where he pleaded guilty to the charge, and the matter was adjourned to today, January, 12, for sentencing.

According to the police release, on July, 6, 2023, officers attached to the Rapid Response Unit (RRU), were on mobile patrol duties in Lauders when they observed a male walking along the said public road. The police transport stopped and the male dropped what appeared to be a firearm on the ground. The police retrieved the firearm and cautioned the accused. Durrant was arrested and later charged with unlawful possession of a .25 pistol without a licence issued under the Firearms Act.
