Schools awarded for outstanding projects in VINLEC Science & Tech Fair

The Girls’ High School, Bishop’s College Kingstown and Georgetown Secondary School have been adjudged the most outstanding secondary schools in this year’s VINLEC National Science and Technology Fair, while the most outstanding primary schools were St Mary’s RC, Calliaqua Anglican and Lower Bay Primary schools.

Most outstanding from the lower primary level in the category of Primary Physical Science was Xylon Richardson of the Kingstown Anglican School with his Vibrobot.

The Lower Bay School Inc won the prize for being the most outstanding in three categories of the lower primary level: Science, Technology and the Environment; Earth and Space Science; as well as the Technology category, while the St Mary’s R.C School was outstanding in two categories of the upper primary level: Science, Technology and the Environment; and the Technology category.

The Dr J P Eustace Memorial Secondary’s, Deshonnie Cumberbatch was most outstanding in the Chemistry category of the lower secondary level with his ‘Invisible Ink’ project. Cumberbatch said that he is hoping to turn this year’s project into a business.

Madison Gonsalves’s ‘Terrarium’ and Chrystal Sutherland’s ‘Outdoor Activities to Reduce Screen Time’ projects from the Girls’ High School were also judged to be outstanding in the categories Environmental Science and Engineering of lower secondary level.

In the upper secondary level, the GHS won prizes for being most outstanding in five categories: Agricultural Science, Behavioural Science, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Food Science.

In the Agricultural Science category, ‘Eco-Friendly Farm’ by Lariyah Samuel, Josel Dasilva and Paula-Ann Smith were outstanding.

‘Music and Memory’ by Jada Edwards, Nahja Stowe and Siobahn Roberts won a prize in the Behavioural Science category.

In the Chemistry category, ‘Lemon Battery’ by Mya Cumberbatch and Nyah James was awarded.

For the Environmental Science category, ‘Bio-Gas’ by Dezmonique Duncan was outstanding and in Food Science, ‘Fermentation’ by Sara Foster and Leah Nanton received an award.

The projects spanned diverse scientific fields such as Physical Science, Technology, Life Science, Engineering, Agricultural Science, and Earth and Space Science, highlighting the participants’ creativity and innovation.

The VINLEC National Science and Technology Fair, organized by the Ministry of Education and National Reconciliation, took place at the Kingstown Methodist Church Hall from November 6 to 10 under the theme “Imagination.”

This year saw projects from 270 participants, the annual event serves as a platform to showcase and encourage creative and innovative ideas among Vincentians, developing future scientific leaders and inventors.
