YOULOU Arts Center is celebrating our women

Submittd by Camille Musser

March is almost here! The special month of the year when all women are celebrated. A time to look around and admire the work done by women in our society.

Historically March 8 is celebrated as International Women’s Day.

A day when the spotlight is focused on women’s accomplishments and contributions.

Today , March is a month-long celebration of women.

Here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), the Youlou Arts Foundation is inviting the public to come and see the work women have made in the visual and performing arts.

Youlou Arts Foundation has organized several activities to help shine the spotlight on “Vincy” women artists.

The focus is to showcase the work made by women artists.

To kick off the month of activities the Youlou Art Centre,  has planned a “Sip & Paint” event for Sunday, March 6. from 2:00p.m to 5:00 p.m

Youlou Arts is inviting women to come to the Centre to relax and enjoy the company of each other while doing something creative.
It’s a time to bond, and feel the magic of women gathered together.

Saturday, March 12, will be the Opening Reception for the show titled “Women Take The Floor”.

The show will feature over 15 women artists. They are: Desterny Greaves, Tansha George, Felisha Lewis, Nerissa King, Shamelia Cunningham, Amanda Frederick, Ashlee Liverpool, LeeAndra Thompson, Latique Browne, Jonella Charles, Raquel Samuel, Charlene Branch, Zen Punnett, Karen Palmer, Shaleila Veira and Joy Celestine.

These women artists have consistently pursued their art making through the years.

During the opening Reception, March 12, there are plans to have several members of the writer’s group “The Nucleus”. read from their work.

The Nucleus is a group of Vincentian women writers focused on highlighting Vincy literature across a range of genres.

They aim to expand the national literary landscape while drawing attention to Vincentian voices, characters and issues in general and issues in regional and international creative spaces. The group started in May of 2020 with six members spreading across St. Vincent, Barbados and the UK.

Members are: Janielle Browne, Dr. Jacinth Browne-Howard, Lafleur Cockburn, Grace Peters-Clarke, Tamara Toney, and Denise Westield.

Youlou Arts is making plans to organize an event where all the members of  “The Nucleus”  will hold a reading event during the month of March.

Finger foods will be served at the opening reception and drinks will be on sale. This event is free, and the public is invited.
The show “ Women Take The Floor” will be up in the Youlou Art Gallery for several months.

On the weekend of March 25-27 there will be a craft fair at the Youlou Art Centre. Several women crafters have been invited to show and sell their artwork.

On display will be an array of crafts made in SVG. The women create amazing products, using local materials.

Youlou Arts Foundation is asking the public to come out and support these women.

Show them some love and respect.

The Centre is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.
